Is This Thermal-Vision Camera Really Worth the Money?

With today’s technology advancing, camera companies are able to create new features and different types of cameras.A new thermal camera, the FLIR Vue Pro, allows you to see different temperatures of everything you view. The FLIR Vue Pro has pretty good framing and features, but is it really worth the big price tag?

For the speculations and features, the FLIR Vue Pro has “an uncooled compact thermal sensor with a resolution of 640 by 512 pixels, and records at 30 frames per second for smooth video.” The FLIR Company also offers a range of different lenses you can purchase for the camera: wide, medium, or narrow field of view. The controls on the FLIR Vue Pro itself are simple since there are only two buttons; a record button, and a Bluetooth button that you press to pair with your mobile device. You can control the FLIR Vue Pro’s camera settings with its phone app, and it communicates via Bluetooth. On the app, you can select from multiple color pallets, orient or invert the image depending how it’s mounted on your UAV/Drone, select scene presets, and more. Although these specs and features are great, there becomes a problem with budget and pricing. For example, the FLIR Vue Pro 640 would be $3,499.00 for the camera itself, if you purchase the Phantom 3 with 4K it would cost $799.00, (since you need a drone to mount it onto), and if you don’t have a mobile device with Bluetooth then it would be $500 for an iPhone 6.  There are definitely other options regarding the drones and mobile device, but I still think the price/flaws of the camera are impractical and out-way the features and specs.

The article, Flying a drone with heat vision is like piloting your own personal Apache,”on fox news also gives another example of how a farmer can also use it; “ If you’re a farmer, the FLIR Vue Pro could also be used for agricultural purposes, such as examining how irrigation is dispersing, or to detect diseased plants.” There may be some farmers, but I don’t know any farmer that has around $2000 for this camera. Now, this would definitely be helpful for your job if you were an animal rescuer, possibly a farmer, a police department, the FBI or even an overprotective dad, I don’t think anyone should buy this compact thermal camera unless it’s for their specific job.

I think this is great technology, but I don’t think the pricing for this camera is practical. The camera has great camera quality and features and be great for a police department, maybe the FBI and other corporations like that, though.
