Kristen Slevin, owner of the Yottabyte candy shop in Smithtown, New York, has decided to run for Town Supervisor of Smithtown.
Kristen is the independent candidate for Town Supervisor, with no party support whatsoever. In her free time, Kristen runs the aforementioned Yottabyte, which she quotes as “[coming from] a love for just being creative.” Kristen did not originally live in Smithtown, she was adopted in 1977, landing in January 1978. She has lived in Smithtown since, with “brief stints of living in Patchogue.” She states that one of her favorite hobbies is “personal development,” as she spends time whenever she can trying to improve herself as a person. Kristen’s favorite restaurant is Old Street Pub, stating that the staff is “very friendly” and that “[her and her husband] have a really great relationship with [the restaurant].” Kristen believes one of the unique aspects of Smithtown is that the town has been around for longer than the United States itself, with many families who are “direct descendents from settlers.”
Kristen believes she is fit to run as Town Supervisor due to her respectable résumé and her experience in operating a business and other “boring stuff,” and she believes a good leader should be able to ¨make decisions independently that are ethical¨ and flexible enough to admit when they’ve made a bad choice. She also believes they should be able to listen to other people’s input. Kristen believes issues related to youth in Smithtown are neglected entirely, including the heroin epidemic sweeping the town. She states ¨I don’t think people really give it the attention that it is requiring,¨ believing that the issue isn’t substance abuse in itself but rather the reason why people turn to abusing substances in the first place.
Kristen believes she should be chosen for Town Supervisor by both newer and older voters because she wants to put term limits into place in Smithtown’s Town Supervisor position, as current supervisor Patrick Vecchio has been in charge for 4 decades, the entirety of Kristen’s life. Kristen doesn’t think Vecchio has done a poor job running the town, as it’s been the only job most people in the town have known. She believes, however, that there needs to be more than one person when accounting for over 100,000 people. She also believes in council districts, something Smithtown doesn’t currently have. This is essentially an extension of government that makes it so there is a council person representing each area of Smithtown, and that person is in charge of that area. She also wants to fix the fact we ¨had sewers throughout all the downtowns, so Lake Avenue, Saint James, King’s Park, and Smithtown.” She would also like a community center for both youth and seniors alike, and give services to the youth such as transportation to an aforementioned community center, similar to buses given to senior citizens.
Kristen is running against Democratic (along with other political parties) candidate Bill Holst and Republican/Conservative candidate Ed Werheim. If you are interested in learning more about Kristen, go to http://bit.ly/2xKQkSz to see her official campaign Facebook page.
