What is BeReal?

BeReal is a new way to see what your friends are doing throughout the day on social media. Once a day, a notification pops up on your phone,”Time to BeReal”. “2 minutes left to capture a BeReal and see what your friends are up to!” Within 2 minutes, you take a picture. One being from the front camera and one from the back. The description on Apple’s App Store, wants the people using the app to ”show your friends who you really are, for once”. This app can gain confidence for people because it shows that not everything seems to be on social media with there being no filters.

The app was launched in December of 2019 in France. It finally kicked off in 2022 and has more than 20 million downloads. There is not a “like ” button on the app but with the RealMoji users can react to posts by taking a selfie and mimicking an emoji. Users can take their BeReal as many times as they want but other users can see how many times they take the picture. You also don’t have to take it within 2 minutes, you can take it any time of the day. Every time the notification goes off during the day, your previous BeReal disappears. There is an option to make your account private. With the rumors going around that Tiktok will have a new feature that is very similar to BeReal, it can start to die out. Will BeReal last like some other main social media platforms? Most likely, no but while it is popular, users should keep spreading the word about it.
