Just imagine waking up to a fresh blanket of white snow on the driveway, icicles are hanging down and kids are building snowmen. There is no school or work and you can use the day to just relax. There is simply no better feeling. No one has felt this magic in New York City though because as of January 29th 2023 NYC had not experienced a measurable snow fall for 325 days.
The last time New York City had waited this long for their first measurable snow was in 1973,that was 50 years ago. New York City usually sees its first snowfall towards the beginning of December. Should the lack of snow cause worries among New Yorkers? The answer to this question is yes. According to climatologists, the lack of snow is most directly associated with climate change.
Mark Wysokie, a New York climatologist commented on the issue. “We’re starting to see in the last 20 years a consistent warming that tells us that there is a climate issue here.”
The odd snow patterns are not just an issue in New York City though, surrounding areas are experiencing a similar issue. For example, Syracus is said to normally receive 120 inches of snow, but as of January 29th they had only received 25 inches. On the other hand Buffalo has received deadly blizzards that account for more than half the snowfall they have seen in 50 years.
The lack of snow in New York City has caused sadness for many New Yorkers. Every winter many New Yorkers see the snow come down and they are instantly filled with joy. Other New Yorkers are fine with this mild winter and they hope it stays this way. On February 1st New York City saw its first measurable snowfall. There was 0.4 inches of snow sitting on the ground of Central Park. Maybe those snow lovers are in luck for the future.
