The 9th annual New York Comic Con was held in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on October 8th through the 11th. Comic Con is a convention where fans of not only comic books, but also graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, movies and television shows gather to appreciate them.
The New York Comic Con is a for-profit event which takes place once a year. The two main parts of Comic Con are panels and “the floor.” A panel is significant people to a comic book, movie, TV show or video, such as the writers, actors and/or producers, will answer questions from their fans. Panels run for the majority of the convention at different times. Each panel focuses on a different TV show, movie, etc. “The floor” is where the venders, who sell fan merchandise, are located.
Here are some of the highlights of the convention…
Two celebrities walked the floor amongst their fans in disguise. Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk/Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Jared Leto, who’s set to play the Joker in the upcoming “Suicide Squad” both donned full face masks and were able to walk the floor. Both actors put pictures of themselves in costume on their Instagrams.
Many of those who attend Comic Con appear in “Cosplay,” a costume of characters from movies, TV, books, video games, etc. The largest cosplay by far was made by Thomas DePetrillo from Rhode Island, who attended Comic Con in a 9 and a half foot tall replica of the Hulkbuster Armor from “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” DePetrillo built the costume himself, working on the armor for 1,600 hours to make all of the joints work and to make the armor look as similar to that of the movie as possible.
Lastly,as always, there were many exciting announcements and premieres. The most surprising premiere was the showing of the entire first episode of Netflix’s newest original series, Jessica Jones, based on the Marvel comic of the same name. Netflix also premiered the trailer for the second season of their hit show, Daredevil. Also, new comic book series for Avatar, Batman and Superman and Spider Woman were announced.
With a record setting attendance of 170,00 Comic Con attendees, there is plenty of promise of many exciting things to come for future Cons.
