It’s 5 A.M.. Do you know where your kids are? Yep, we are swimming at Hauppauge. If you have any friends in your classes that smell like chlorine, have wet hair, and are falling asleep mid-way throughout the period, it’s probably because they are on the Smithtown Swim and Dive Team.
I know what you are thinking: “We have a swim team?!”
Because our school does not have a pool, we begin our days at around four o’clock in the morning for our five o’clock practice. We swim until 6:15 then we head into a locker room with 37 girls and only six showers and four mirrors. We have 30 minutes to get changed, which is why first quarter we don’t always look our best. Besides all of those aspects, this is the most enjoyable team I have been on. We have all become a family and there is no one I rather be up with that early other than this team.
SGVS&D is 5-2 at the moment, and the two teams we lost to haven’t lost a meet in 20 years. Our most recent meet was 10/19 at Sachem North with a score of 91-87. Our last three events (100 back,100 breast, and the 400 free relay) were swam as an exhibition. That means that we were winning by a decent amount that we gave them the points for the last three events to catch them up. Danielle Flugman made State Qualifying in her 200 individual medley. Elizabeth Howlin won the 50 free with a 26.07, she is also the fifth girl to qualify for state qualifiers in an individual event on our team. The other four are Elizabeth Gallagher, Christina Hummel, Alexa Dominger, and Danielle Flugman.
