Met Gala 2022: What Went Wrong?

Each year, the Met Gala is a spectacle of public interest, with even those who’d otherwise disinterested in fashion possessing some kind of opinion. Not only that, the event is the pinnacle of critique based on the idea of class, with everlasting debates over who is “worthy” of such a prestigious invitation to this eye-catching event. This year’s Met was no exception, and following the recently rescheduled 2021 Americana theme that occurred in October this year, it was certainly intriguing to see if people would live up to the 2022 theme just as miserably. And that they did.

Firstly, what was the 2022 theme supposed to be? According to Vogue, who essentially runs the event, the official title was “Gilded Glamour”. A mini history lesson, The Gilded Age was a period in U.S history between 1870 and 1900 where the economy was flourishing, as we became the leader of world industrialization. As with any time of economic prosperity, people lived lavishly, with fashion being highly reflective of this. You can look no further than Bridgerton for the rundown of occuplence that women and men’s fashion alike entailed during this time period, with high hair, large, feathered hats, fancy suits, and big hoop skirts heavily embroidered and bedazzled.

So, what were celebrities wearing in 2022? Well, it certainly wasn’t that.
