Can We Be Good Without God?

In today’s world, everyone is entitled to their own views and beliefs. However, at times, these opinions can be spiraled around and picked apart to the point where everyone starts voicing what they believe to be right in their mind.  As 2016 approaches, everyone needs to understand that we are entitled to have opinions and views that differ from others. Therefore, not everyone is going to agree with you. Thus, as a developing generation, accepting but not always understanding the views of different people is crucial to our society today.

However, the point I am trying to get at brings us to religion. This is a “touchy” subject and will most likely remain this way if we don’t comprehending the ways some people choose to live their lives.  I am not a religious person. I was not raised to be one simply because my mother is Catholic and my father is Jewish and they never forced religion and views upon me. However, throughout my life I have learned to appreciate how much people’s religions consume their life and I’ve always been inspired by that.  Furthermore, I do not judge anyone’s religion and I feel that whatever you believe is to be your choice.

I believe that by not following a religion, does not make you any lesser of a good person than one who does have a religious faith. You are good based off of yourself and the good that is in you as a person and what you do with that, not based off of which god you believe in or which church/temple/etc. you go to.

I, personally, have been involved in many events that help service the community. It is a rewarding feeling when you help someone or something that is in need.  I feel as though I am doing good, making me a better person than I was before.  Every Sunday, I don’t feel like I am a bad person because I am not sitting in a church praying or worshiping God.  The person sitting next to me in class isn’t necessarily a better person by default because of their religious virtues. I believe the good you do will better the world in many different ways.

In the religion of Christianity, if you are a good person all your life, then you will be sent to heaven once your time comes. However, that belief should not be forced upon others and make others feel ashamed that their religion doesn’t have the same purpose.  In addition to, people that do not follow a particular religion or faith should not be scrutinized for the way they live their life as well.

We as humans are all created equally, whether people think it or not.  Each and every one of us are on different paths in life and wherever you go is your decision.  Whether it’s the argument about who’s the better baseball team, is the movie better than the book, green eyes or blue eyes, everyone has their own opinion. Our society is functioning based off of differing views.

By acquiring different perspectives in life, may lead to opportunities you have never dreamt of before. People need to keep an open mind when it comes to discussing religions. People aren’t going to change the way they are just because you don’t feel they’re a good person based on their religion.

Therefore, concluding the question, “Can We Be Good Without God?”, the answer is, yes. Everyone can be good in their own ways and it is the way you treat people in life that really determines that. Making sacrifices, helping an individual in need, are all examples of how being a good person can come from within you, not only from following a certain religion.
